Chapter 9

Charlotte

Texts and calls startle us both awake before sunrise. I miss two calls from my parents, but their voicemails leave little information. I assume it’s about the wedding. Neither are invited to our tiny ceremony in the Hamptons and since we leave today, I guess they thought I’d change my mind by now.

I feel bad, but it’s for the best that they stay away. I’m not a superstitious person, but you shouldn’t have people at your wedding who want it to fail. Daddy already made his feelings clear when he found out we were engaged. He doesn’t give a damn about me marrying a man I may or may not love. His big concern is that I’m ruining his plans to steal Duncan’s birthright.

Do I love him? Maybe. Probably. I like him more than before and I always liked him a little. Oh, who am I kidding? But how do I like him? Is it only physical? Duncan looks like a Norse god. Dark blonde hair, green eyes, tall, powerful, bursting with masculinity. Everyone loves him. It’s easy to love him.

I just wish we had more time.

Duncan’s calls are from his lawyers. Something’s come up. He says it’s no big deal but needs to meet them at his office before we depart.

“Why can’t they come here? We leave in three hours.” I pout, carrying my wedding dress downstairs.

He yanks me in his arms and kisses me. “You just make sure we’re all packed, Sweet Cheeks. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“Sweet Cheeks?” I scrunch my nose and scowl. “It’s Miss Sweet Cheeks to you, sir.” As I strut away, he pulls me back and dips me.

“Don’t get used to it. In twenty-four hours, you’ll need to change it to Mrs. Sweet Cheeks.” He squeezes my ass and twirls me loose.

He’s got some charm. When he tries.

“This will be quick, I promise. What did your parents want?” He asks before he walks through the door.

“I don’t know. They left a message but didn’t say much. I’ll call them after the wedding. I don’t want them making me feel guilty. This weekend is all about fun.” I wink.

“You’re damn right it is. You won’t know what’s hit you until you wake up Monday, dazed, sore and soaking wet.” He smirks and slams the door.

I gasp and then giggle.

Such a dirty man. This should be interesting.
